TOEFL iBT score calculator

TOEFL changed scale on 21 January 2026. Scores are now reported from 1 to 6 in half-point steps, and the overall score is the average of your four sections rounded to the nearest half band — the same arithmetic IELTS uses. This page calculates on the new scale, converts between the new and old scales while universities finish updating their requirements, and works backwards from a target.

Your four section scores, 1–6

What changed in January 2026

TOEFL iBT now reports four section scores and an overall score on a 1–6 scale, in half points, deliberately aligned to the CEFR levels most learners already recognise. The overall score is the average of the four sections, rounded to the nearest half band — ETS gives the example of an average of 5.25 being reported as 5.5. For a two-year transition period, score reports also carry a comparable total on the old 0–120 scale.

If you are choosing between TOEFL and IELTS, this makes them arithmetically the same at the overall level: both average four skills and round to the nearest half band. It also means the same planning trap applies to both — you rarely need your target score in every section, because rounding can carry you over.

The official conversion table

Published by ETS for comparing scores across the change. Section columns are the old 0–30 scores that correspond to each new band; the total column is the old 0–120 total.

Two things worth knowing

Why this tool will not convert your raw marks

Reading and Listening are marked from a number of correct answers, but ETS does not publish a fixed table turning that count into a section score, and the conversion differs between test forms — a slightly harder form is scaled slightly more generously. Speaking and Writing are not raw-marked at all; they are judged against criteria. Any site promising to turn "30 out of 39 correct" into a precise TOEFL section score is guessing, and a guess dressed as a number is worse than no number, because you will plan around it.
